Who We Are Helping

New Beginnings, Bluegrass, Inc. began in 1997 with the mission of providing safe, affordable housing and supportive services to persons with serious mental illness. We offer a variety of housing programs ranging from staffed residences with 24/7 supervision to outreach services offering supports to individuals living independently in the community. Our agency is currently at maximum capacity and has a waiting list with more than 30 people desiring services.

Because New Beginnings offers quality housing and services, the turnover among residents is very low. Since its inception, several residents have chosen to make other living arrangements, often because of strides in their personal progress as a result of living in the stable environment provided through our program. Given its values of encouraging self-sufficiency and despite the challenges of the severely mentally ill, New Beginnings has maintained a high success rate with residents’ wellness since it began offering affordable housing and support services.

We Need Volunteers

There is a pressing need for volunteers to assist at New Beginnings in a range of tasks:

  • organize outings for residents
  • accompany residents on outings

  • organize celebrations such as Thanksgiving dinner and birthdays
  • participate and assist with celebrations such as Thanksgiving dinner and birthdays
  • drive residents to appointments

With eligible applicants on our waiting list, New Beginnings needs more housing in Fayette County. Examples of properties that would fit the needs of our residents are described below:

  • Independent one-bedroom apartments located near access to transportation, shopping, medical care, and employment opportunities.
  • Properties suitable for shared home living, such as four- to five-bedroom homes located near access to transportation, shopping, medical care, and employment opportunities.
  • Commercial property that could be used as a drop-in center for residents to hold meetings, host activities, and seek respite.

If you or your company would like to discuss the property needs of New Beginnings, Bluegrass, Inc., please contact Christy Shuffett, Executive Director, at (859) 245-2400.
